"So," James said after a while, "I guess I should try to find a job, then. Now that I'm not—" He sniffled. "Not wealthy anymore."
Archie smiled gently. "It's okay, James, you don't have to. I have some savings—"
"But I want to!" James protested. "I can't just sit around all day doing nothing. I just don't know what I'm supposed to do with my life now."
"Really?" Archie raised an eyebrow. "To be honest, I kind of assumed you would just go back to being a detective with Hampton and Madge."
"Eh," James shrugged. "I think Madge is the new Stallion of 'Fawx & Stallion' now. And even if she wasn't, Hampton was always the better detective of the two of us. I would probably just get in his way." He gave Archie a stern look. "Do not tell him I said that."
Archie laughed. "Alright, love. So what do you want to do instead?"
James sighed. "I don't know. There are so many options... What if I'm terrible at all of them, Archie? What if I mess it all up again?"
Archie pressed a gentle kiss to his forehead. "One step at a time, remember? We'll figure it out. Together. And for now, why don't you start by helping me bake some scones?"
James grinned. "Only if you let me lick the bowl."
